Alabama,又译亚拉巴马州。出自于美国西南印第安人部落的乔克托语中的词汇Alibamule,意思是“灌木丛的清理者”。该单词后被改写为Albaamo,最初是当地一条主要河流的名字,后来在河岸边生活的原住民也把自己叫做阿拉巴马人(Albaamaha)。再后来法国殖民者来到此地,将地名讹作Alibamon。阿拉巴马州建立时据此取名,并再度讹作Alabama。
